Sparkling Hot Girl in Photoshop Tutorial

This tutorial is taken from the website abduzeedo all credit goes to it.

In this tutorial I will show you how to create an image using this technique. It basically mixes some techniques from tutorials like Magic Lighting Effect, Amazing Photoshop light effect in 10 Steps, and the latest Create the MSNBC header effect.

Step 1

Create a new document, mine is 800×600 pixels. After that double click on the background layer to open the Layer Style dialog box and add a Gradient Overaly. Select Radial for the Style and use a dark red to black for the colors

Step 2

Select a nice photo, in my case an amazingly hot girl from the 30 Color and Pattern Inspiration Bikinis post. Select the Pen Tool (P) and start creating a path with the shape of the woman. Later we will convert this path to selection to mask the girl.

Step 3

After you create a path with the shape of the woman, go to the Path palette, right next to the Layer Palette. You will see the path with the girl’s shape. Click on the dotted circle icon at the bottom of the box to create a selection from the path.

Step 4

Back to the Layer Palette, select the girl’s layer and then go to Selection>Refine Edge. This command will allow us to adjust the selection in real time with some nice settings like feather, smooth, contras, and others. Make some tests with a black background. When you have a good selection click ok. After that go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection.

Step 5

Lets increase the contrast of our girl, go to Image>Settings>Brightness/Contrast. After that reduce the layer like the image below. Then add a bit of noise. Filter>Noise>Add Noise.

Step 6

Group the girl layer so it will be inside a folder on the Layer Palette. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M), set the feather option to 30px and create a elliptical selection like the image below. Now select the Folder instead of the girl’s layer and after that go again to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. We will add the mask to the folder and everything inside the folder.

Step 7

Double click on the girl’s layer to open the Layer Style box. Select Outer Glow. For the Blend Mode use Color Dodge and for the size set 35px. After that Duplicate this layer and go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. Use 43º for the Angle and 155 for distance. Make sure that the blurry layer is behind the normal layer.

Step 8

Create a layer, not inside the folder anymore. This layer has to be behind the girl. Then go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 9

Create another layer, behind the clouds’ layer. Now go to Filter>Render>Fibers… Use 13 for the variance and 4 for the Strength. After lets add another filter, this time Motion Blur, go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. The angle will 90º and for the distance use more than 300px like the image below.

Step 10

First rotate the layer. Then select Lasso Tool (L) set 30px for the feather and create a selection like I did. Then one more time go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. After that double click the layer to open the Layer Style box. In the Layer Style’s first screen set the Fill Opacity to 60%, then add a Gradient Overlay, use the rainbow colors.

Step 11

Here it’s all about brushes. But first create a new Folder in the Layer Palette and set the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that create the layers you want to be light inside of this folder and using white color. You can even add some different shapes and apply gaussian blur to create those rays of light.

Conclusion

This is one of those designs that looks a bit complicated when we see it at first. But when you start working on it, it turns out to be much easier than we thought. You can add different light colors, more or less sparks, or even explode some parts of her body. Well that’s another tutorial I will write about.

My name is Alon Chou, I am from Taiwan. I graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts, I worked in a game studio, mainly working on low-poly 3D modeling. Since I was still very attached to 2D illustration, I decided to leave the job and focus on drawing as a 2D artist. I am now working as a freelancer, and I do illustrations, character designs and scenery designs for games and animation films.

Drawing to me is like a single frame of a movie, it is dramatic, and should be something simple and easy to understand without difficult theories. A drawing should be a complete presentation of plot, emotion, the interaction, background, the space relation, the lights and shadows, the atmosphere, etc. I would like to include all these elements into my drawings, and make it better.

George Grie (born May 14, 1962) is a Canadian digital neo-surrealist artist. He is well known for numerous modern surrealism, 3D, 2D, and photomanipulation images.
George Grie graduated from the State University in 1985 with a BFA(Hons) (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and BDes(Hons) (Bachelor of Design). Born in USSR during the Soviet Union Regime he did not adopt traditional and politically correct socialistic realism art style, but chose instead to follow the more controversial, difficult, and demanding path of innovative neosurrealism painting and graphic. The result of his endeavors during his relatively short fine-art painting career (1985-1998) has brought a considerable measure of success with his numerous neo-surrealist & fantasy art shows in several European capitals as London (Mistral gallery), Stockholm (Artnova gallery), Saint-Petersburg (Cinema House gallery), and Helsinki (Artson gallery) etc. Grie's paintings are concerned with the portrayal of strong and powerful images relying on visual impact. They are about capturing visual paradoxes, sometimes they depict calm and contemplative moments, solitude, and sometimes melancholy. Grie's use of a photo realistic painting technique gives a stark contrast between the light source and the often-dark tonality found in his early paintings.

Frank Miller's The Spirit

Comic book icon Frank Miller has seen a great deal of press lately, what with the adaptation of his Sin City breaking cinematic ground last year and 300 looking to do the same in 2006. But the fan favorite illustrator/scribe is looking to dive headfirst into the Hollywood system, making the transition from "adapted" to "adaptor" helming the live-action version of Will Eisner's The Spirit.

IGN caught up with Miller at a special Los Angeles sneak peak of the 300 where he updated us on the status of his solo directorial debut.

"We're working on the script right now," says Miller of The Spirit. "We've got a good strong story to work with, and we're hoping to be in production either spring or fall [2006]."

While it's no secret that the project will be utilizing the same digital background technology used on Sin City and 300, rumor has it that Miller plans on using actual illustrated panels taken directly from the Eisner comics.

"No, we'll be more subtle than that," debunks Miller, "but not much. It'll be very faithful to the books."

Miller goes on to reveal that he does have a certain actor in mind for the role of the titular hero, but stops short of naming the individual for fear of destroying any chance he may actually have of attaching him.

Admitting that he's making the shift from comics to film because "the movie stuff has been coming so fast and furious that I need to strike while the iron's hot," he confirms that he will be reprising his role as co-director for the upcoming Sin City 2.

"Either that or The Spirit will be the next thing I shoot," explains Miller. "Either me and Robert [Rodriguez] on Sin City 2 or me on The Spirit. It all depends on where the pieces are on both projects. Sin City 2 is scripted, so it's mainly a matter of Robert's schedule and all the other production stuff."

Comic book fans need to not worry, however. Miller has no intention of leaving the comics industry altogether. In fact, he reveals that he is currently working on a 200-page graphic novel. More on this as it develops

Comic-Con Magazine has debuted a new photo of Samuel L. Jackson as The Spirit arch-enemy the Octopus on the cover of its latest issue. Adapted from the legendary comic book series created by Will Eisner and written/directed by Frank Miller, the action-adventure opens Christmas 2008. Gabriel Macht, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Paz Vega, Jaime King, Dan Lauria, Stana Katic, Johnny Simmons and Louis Lombardi co-star.

Photoshop Tutorial: digital drawing Girl

This tutorial is for beginner Photoshop users, so we will explain everything in detail; you’ll learn to use the vector drawing tools of Photoshop using our mouse… for now we won’t be using a digitizer tablet.

To start, the best thing to do is having a good sketch on paper; the size of the drawing doesn’t have to be very big because we will delete it at the end, but also it doesn’t have to be very small. Let’s scan it at 150-300 dots per inches (dpi from now on) to make sure that when we zoom we can clearly see the lines to work properly.

Let’s start with a white canvas (Ctrl + n), with a good size and resolution just in case we want to print in a big size.

To add new layers just click the button “Create layer”.

Let’s put the sketch in it (to do this, open up the file where you have your drawing, select everything with Ctrl + a and cut the selection with Ctrl + x. After that, paste it with Ctrl + v in the layer; if it’s small, alter it with Ctrl + t) and name it “sketch”, then create a new layer where we will put the trace of the figure and let’s name it “lines”. So we should have the 3 layers as it appears in the image.

Now we’ll use the Pen Tool to redraw the sketch; select it and activate the Paths Mode (left superior corner, the icon of the pen inside the square):

Now let’s click in the 3 sectors, and 3 little squares like these ones will be created:

If you right click (or click and maintain pressed) the Pen Tool, a menu like this one will appear:

Choose “Convert Point Tool”(the last one), press in any of the 3 squares we created a moment ago and drag it; this way you can twist the line and form what it’s called a Berzier Curve. Start shaping it in the way you want (we can always add or remove this squares with the Add Anchor Point or Delete Anchor Point as we want more or less complex shapes). You should get something like this:

There’s a little trick to create rounded shapes. It consist in create the vertexes and to add an intermediate point, after that you just have to move it with the Direct Selection Tool and that curve will be made by itself.

Make sure you are in the “lines” layer, select the Brush Tool and choose a hard brush (right click in the canvas, they are the first ones in the brushes list) of about 5 pixels with a different color from the one of the sketch, for example red:

With the Pen Tool selected, right click in the canvas and choose “Stroke Path”, and a window like this will appear:

Choose the Brush Tool and hit OK; this will generate a trace with the characteristics of the brush we chose before that will follow the previous route (this can be done with all the other tools).

If you mark the square Simulate Pressure we will obtain traces that will be smaller in the edges; with a little of imagination you can get all types of traces.

WELL DONE! You have you first trace, now do the rest The trick here is to make the traces in parts, in different layers so you can retouch comfortably superposed traces… like in this image:

It’d be ideal if you could make traces of the complete areas (for example we trace the glasses in one layer and the hair in another one, after that we delete the traces of the glasses covered with hair); it’s better to do it that way than starting tracing through the eyebrows and the hair with the same trace.

Now you have to work with the rest of the traces. When you’re done with it, we have to put together all the layers; we can do this selecting all the layers and pressing Ctrl + e. At the beginning it can be hard to manage with all the curves, but with some practice, the sketch can look as the original.

We have just finished our digital inking. You might probably notice that the lines are a bit boring as they aren’t modulated… patience, we’ll see that with more detail soon

You’ve seen them everywhere. No self-respecting Web2.0 site would be without them; those little splashes of color that jump out at you and scream “HEY LOOK AT ME! OVER HERE!” Yes, that’s right. We’re talking about perhaps the most over-used trendy little design fad to come out of the two-oh movement-the badge!

Admit it. They’re pretty cool, huh? So let’s make one…

Crack open a new Photoshop file and create a new layer. Call it “badge” or something like that. Now grab the shape tool and select the 8 point star shape from the dropdown palette of available shapes.

Note: If this shape isn’t available for you, you may need to load it into Photoshop by clicking on the options menu icon (>) in that same palette and selecting “shapes” and then when prompted, choose “append.”

Now that you’ve done this, draw a shape the size of your badge. Make sure you’re creating either using either filled pixel shapes or paths, not vector shape layers. For this example, I’m using paths.

Next, Ctrl+Click on the path in your paths palette to load its selection and fill it with a color. Any color will do for now.

Next, hit Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Now go up to Edit - Transform - Rotate. Enter a rotation amount of 23 degrees in the rotation options. Alternately, you can just eyeball it if you like. It’s pretty easy to see when everything is lined up correctly. This rotation will finish creating your badge shape, so merge the two layers by hitting Ctrl+E.

Now click on the “Lock transparent pixels” icon in the layers palette for the “badge” layer. Set your foreground color to #ff8400 and your background color to #ff4900. Using the gradient tool, with the foreground to background gradient selected, drag from the top left or your badge to the bottom right. Hold down the shift key to constrain your gradient on a 45 degree downward angle.

Now let’s add some layer styles. Double click on the layer to bring up the layer styles dialog and apply the following:

Now create another new layer and call it “highlight”. Using your circular marquee tool, make a selection just big enough to encompass the badge shape. Fill it with white and move it so that it obscures the upper left half to two-thirds of the badge. Alt+Click between the “badge” and the “highlight” layer in the layers palette to group them together. Now lower the layer’s opacity to 30%.

Now click on the layer mask icon for the “highlight” layer in the layers palette. Select a black to white gradient and drag from the top left of the badge down to the bottom right, just as we did above.

Great! We’re almost done. Let’s add some text. Of course, be sure to use a nice, trendy Web2.- font.

That text looks a little plain. Let’s give it a simple layer style to make it pop out more (or in, in this case). Double click on the text layer and apply the following style.

There you have it, our finished badge!

Reuse old cards for a second hand shop.

Get rid of the evidence you ever met the headhunter.

A clear message from a debt recovery agent. If you don't pay I'll break your bones. Here's the x-ray of my last client broken finger as proof.

Business card for an acupuncturist with small holes to demonstrate what will happen to your skin.

Perforated cards demonstrate what a separation lawyers does.

If you don't want to separate you can consider marriage counseling with a help of scotch tape.

There is nothing better then a little freebie. In this case a few seeds demonstrating how lush can make your place greener.

A balloon visiting card for a chest physician that is only legible when inflated demonstrates how important it is to have healthy lungs.

Pieces of broken pottery are used to hold the name and phone number for a greek restaurant.

A set of semi-transparent layers allows you to mix and match clothes on the illustrated girl. (Click the image for a larger size.)

Finally, allow me not to explain the meaning of this card for the Toronto hemp company. The target will know exactly what it means.

After the creative business cards showcase received over a million page views, I decided to post part two.

These cards are also out-of-the-box ideas that most clients would love to have, but would never have the balls to actually use. Hopefully you will enjoy the ideas presented here as much as I did and will get inspired to create your own cool designs.

I would like to thank everyone who sent me their coolest designs!

Let's start with a cutting edge design. Literally.

And if you managed to cut too deep use this rubber band to stop arterial bleeding.

Which brings me to this bloody cool design. You can play with this forever.

When you're done playing, look at this concept where the card is in a small plastic bag to protect it from getting wet. Naturally this is done for a swimming instructor. Cheap and great.

You can make use of other inexpensive household objects as well to grab the attention and make sure you won't fit into the standard business card holder. Like this clothes pin "card".

Ideally you would need to be relevant to the subject of your profession with your idea. Like this condom pack that is used by a divorce lawyer as his visiting card as well as distributed in bars as a direct marketing piece.

Or this hair grip holder for a hair and make-up artist.

And if you really want to be remembered, give a whoopee cushion. It's certainly great fun on one hand, or I should rather say one cheek. Personally, I wouldn't want my persona to be associated with loud farts.

How about these silly glasses? While it will make my 2 year old laugh for sure, good luck with them on the board meeting.

You can stop cracking jokes and still remain playful by designing a card that germinates and demonstrates your abilities to create a great park in no time, as it is done for this landscaper architect.

Another card that demonstrates a profession is the card of Kevin Mitnick, the famous hacker, which is essentially a lock picking tool set. He always said that the easiest way to get hold of a password is to ask the blond secretary for it in an authoritative tone, so I have no idea why he needs to break in anywhere.

Another metallic card. This one is in the shape of a mini designer working hard at his desk.

One more mini person at your service any time you wish to pull him out of your pocket.

Let's look at more cards that refer to professions. Here is a card that resembles a Larry King microphone for a DJ.

Another done for an architect that features a ruler. Don't expect a Hundertwasser style building from this guy!

This card demonstrates what the National Encyclopedia does. Explains what things are.

Great idea for a simple product. Demonstrate what hinges do directly with your card.

Yes, it's been done too many times, but it still works. A card for a restaurant with a bite. I wonder if I should put ketchup or mustard on my card before eating it. I think I'll put both.

A card for a gift shop with a ribbon and a bow of course. How sweet!

This sandpaper based card is made for a finishing school in India. What the hell do they teach at a finishing school? I wonder what came first. The client or the idea?

Talking about special paper, here is a card made of really shiny paper. Nothing modest about this one. Miss Hilton would love it.

More folding shiny goodness for a puppeteer.

If you can't think of an idea, you can still use a special material for your card and it will still make you stand out from the crowd. Like this one made of fine corrugated cardboard.

This card also uses special material, but in this case it's totally relevant. It's printed on rough textile that is similar to the material of the bags coffee comes in.

Traditionally cards are designed by graphic designers or art directors and copywriters are not part of the process. But you really should involve your writer next time. Check out this funny set of visiting cards.

Another great copy based concept here.

This simple copy based business card reminds me of my dad, who always said it pays to be honest. So, if you can't afford a talented copywriter, just be yourself and be brutally honest. I wonder what this guy's personal card says. I love you(r tits)?

Talk about being broke. Don't print a card at all, just buy a pack of playing cards and write your contact info on it. You can also recycle train or parking tickets. Giving away ATM slips or used sanitary products are not recommended.

If you like the idea of tickets and have the budget to get it printed you can simply copy the design.

Or fake a pack of chewing gums. It will be most popular with the Singapore customs officers.

And while away send miniature postcard-like business cards to prospective clients.

If you feel royal send cards that look like letters stamped with wax .

While you're at it, why don't you introduce the whole company at once. Give your client a whole portfolio of cards.

Or you can make the client come back for the next piece of your corporate puzzle.

If you'd rather stay away from such a frankenface, simply create a series of cards with different designs on their backs and give a new one to your partner for every new assignment. Works great with clients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Your partner may not have OCD, but have you tested him for color blindness? You may try to do just that with this card that reveals the cardholder's face reproduced with an inkjet printer sporting a stunning 1dpi resolution.

Be careful, a card says a lot about their owner. This clever folding matryoshka doll card for example suggests multiple personality disorder.

To cure these conditions, how about offering a pack of pills?

Going back to fun foldings, here is a card that can be turned into a sundial. It's been created for an antique watch collector.

Another interesting folding will be liked by modelers. Fold a toy car and keep it on your desk.

Please don't overdo these folds. Daniel who? Mr Castor what? This one simply confuses the hell out of me. Great way to intimidate your client into never calling you again.

This one is stripy.
